On June 7th, 2015 we gathered to reconnect our self-care to the earth. Mamá Maíz and Sacred Moon Medicine came together to guide those who participated in this ancient Mayan medicine. We both prepared and basked our medicines under the energy of the full moon before our ceremony and her energy was present that night. As many of us know this traditional practice has been used for many generations by Mayan curanderas and parteras. Bajos have been used to assist mujers during postpartum and/or to assist with female reproductive health. The further I look into the use of this medicine the clearer I can see the benefit fit for all, not only mujers.
When you sit with the different herbas and get to know how they can assist you, you begin to become aware of what your body needs. You connect with your body in a way where many of us have yet to explore. We have come to believe that only a doctor is capable of looking into our vaginas and tell us whats going on.I believe its time we shift this idea and when we decide to take our health, our reproductive health into our own hands we begin to hear and understand things that we never have before, we begin to decolonize our medicine!
Bajos bring heat to the pelvic floor then gently to our womb, this increases circulation and begins to move energy. It is important to remember that our ancestors have been using herbas in many ways. When some of us think of herbs we think herbal teas but in all reality we must remember that we have been burning (smudging) and steaming herbas for many moons now. The infused water nurtures your body and spirit as it begins to release its water vapors, this is where the gentle medicinal properties of the plants are carried and begin to comfort you. Once we bring that heat arrives to our wombs we begin to stimulate circulation to the pelvis, this nurtures, tones and cleanses the body while healing genital tissue. As womb carriers our vaginal tissue is the most absorbent in our entire bodies, benefiting from the plants properties and volatile oils.
Bajos may also assit with digestive issues and trauma. I have worked with many who feel disconnected to their bodies due to past experiences and this ceremony of self care have assisted many to heal their spirit has well as bodies.
We must remember the water we is sacred, the herbas we use have spirit and the earth on which we kneel on during ceremony is life. All is sacred and this ceremony gives you the opportunity to become apart of this medicine, to become connected to your body and the earth for we are one.
How to prepare bajo
you will need about a quart of water, depending on the bowl you will be using, use this bowl only for ceremony.
If you have herbs in your garden you can harvest from them and start a relationship with these plants, they are our ancestors.
Remember to be humble when gathering, never take more then you will use.
Typically you may prepare a cup or two of dried herbs, and about a quart of fresh herbs. You may also mix dried with fresh.
If possible you may gather herbs and have them sit in water over night. You may sit your herbas, water or both under the energy of the moon over night.
The following day use the herbas for ceremony, before you begin to simmer sit with the medicine. You may share a prayer, song or your intention for the medicine. Remember the water and herbas are alive and will assist us with our needs, we must always show gratitude to them.
Bring the herbs to a gentle simmer and allow to sit for 20 min. If possible let the plant material steep for another 20 min. with lid on.
While you wait you may light candles, journal, write your intentions and or prayers. Remember this is time for you turn off all distractions and take a moment to yourself.
We prepared an alter at our gathering, you may also smudge the area you will be holding ceremony.
Once medicine is ready you may kneel (childs pose) lifting and lowering your pelvic floor, finding a comfortable position.
Before settling in test the heat with the palm of your hand, making sure the heat is comfortable.
Remove any clothes from the waist down, remember it is important to keep heat in the body during ceremony but always make sure you are comfortable. You may keep top and socks on if needed.
Wrap your body with a sarape or blanket. We want this moment to represent us being in the womb of our mother earth, or a temazcal for example.
Gently lower your body to the steam, please be careful to not burn yourself.
If needed make a small opening if for whatever reason you become uncomfortable, listen to your body. You may stop when ever needed.
if you are comfortable sit under steam for 20-30mins. Enjoy this moment, connect with yourself, the plants and the earth.
When you have completed ceremony lay for at least 20 mins, I recommend 30 mins if possible. Keep warm, wrapping yourself with the blanket and keeping heat in the body. You may place your hands on your belly or womb staying connected.
When you are done always make sure to return the water and herbs you have used to the earth, it may be in your garden or small potted plant, this is how we show gratitude.
It is best to hold ceremony at night, before bed so that we may keep the warm energy in our bodies, if you have to step outside please dress warmly.
